Complete Guide & Walkthrough for Ring: The Legend of the Nibelungen (PC & Dreamcast), Featuring Artwork, Concept Art, and Storyboards
This dossier, accessible from the [Ring: The Legend of the Nibelungs – The Lost Dreamcast Prototype Unearthed] page, aims to uncover the hidden treasures of Ring: The Legend of the Nibelungen on PC and Dreamcast. It offers an immersive journey through the eyes of its developers, shedding light on the complexity of its creation, the depth of its Wagnerian epic, the distinctive artwork of Philippe Druillet, and the intricacies of its previously unseen Dreamcast prototype. Now, let us venture into the heart of the game's four levels, where Norse mythology intertwines with science fiction in a dystopian universe.
The 1990s marked the rise of the Point-and-Click genre, a format particularly well suited to interactive, cinematic gaming experiences. Among the studios that embraced this approach was Arxel Tribe (AT), whose Ring: The Legend of the Nibelungen reflected a belief that there was a market for games with strong literary and cultural ambitions. Myst, a poetic and immersive puzzle-driven Point-and-Click adventure game, showed them the way.
Arxel Tribe released its first title, Pilgrim: Faith as a Weapon, for PC in 1997, followed in 1998 by Ring: The Legend of the Nibelungen, which propelled the studio onto the international stage. Published by Cryo Interactive Entertainment, the game went on to sell more than 400,000 copies worldwide.
The PC Version

Building on the commercial success of Ring on PC, Cryo planned a Dreamcast port. Although development on SEGA's console got off to a promising start, the French company, led by Philippe Ulrich, Rémi Herbulot, and Jean-Martial Lefranc, ultimately cancelled the project, concluding that the Dreamcast's sales were too low to justify continuing its development.
Today, the community can experience an early build of Arxel Tribe's game, which is almost entirely playable, on the final console released by the company behind Sonic the Hedgehog.
What are you waiting for? Download the Ring: The Legend of the Nibelungen Dreamcast prototype and embark on the adventure. The walkthrough available on this page will guide you step by step to the fulfillment of Ish's destiny, one of the last survivors of Earth.
Level Discovery and Exploration
Future generations will luckily never experience the anxiety and emptiness that haunted us from birth. We were Earth's orphans. Poor indeed was humanity deprived of its planet, of its archives. Crushed under the tyranny of the FOUR, the universe itself, was of little consolation.
Today, one wonders how we could sacrifice our lives to this daunting task of reconstitution rather than trying to improve our sorry living conditions. Learn that nothing is worse for a man than being born without memories. And so we worked as desperate slaves of our own utopia, seeking the faintest traces of our culture, and thereby our very identity.
The Dril: From Concept to In-Game Rendering

Thanks to 'Mnemogenetics', a science whose origins and creators we are still do not know, we embarked into our own memories as pilgrims looking there for the heritage of humanity.
I don't know how we had the intuition that we would find ourselves again by rediscovering our legends. No doubt ERDA had patiently prepared the way. The Four allowed us to pursue our efforts in exchange for theatrical performances; for them, it seemed like an innocent way of keeping their populations entertained.
I understood only much later why I had been chosen to put back together the RING cycle. The Four saw it as an apology of power, vindication for the force that would convince me to take part in their game. I now recognise the subtle influence of ERDA in this error. As I played both parts of hero and villain, I was but an empty page upon which one would print humanity's faults and virtues. ERDA wanted me to understand Evil in order to fight it and to choose Good for myself so that I might know how to defend it.
Erda's Evolution from Concept to In-Game Appearance

May the generations to come remember that the greatest threat lies primarily in forgetting. Any horror, any cataclysm can repeat itself. Each and every one of us is a Keeper of the human temple.
The playable character, Ish, looks back on parts of his journey throughout Ring and warns future generations of the mistakes they must avoid through The Great Book of Ish, as described in the Ring manual. The manual, available in several languages, can be downloaded from the Abandonware France website.
Prologue (GD1): Play without a save file
Explore the asteroid—or perhaps a spaceship—and listen to the stories of Brünnhilde, Siegmund, Loge, Alberich, the giants Fasolt and Fafner, and Wotan, the Father of the Gods. This journey will immerse you in the game's striking visual atmosphere. Next, make your way to the center of the esplanade and descend into the well.. Then make your way to the center of the esplanade and descend into the well. You will enter the Dril, a secret teleportation chamber (a hub) that allows you to experience the destinies of the four characters you will embody throughout the game.
This is where it all begins, before entering the Dril (concept art and in-game screenshot)

I. Alberich, the Nibelheim and the Rhine (GD2): Save RING_D2A VMI/VMS
In the Forge, Mime, Alberich's obedient brother, gives you the Glug along with several ores. To the right, inside a small alcove, take the time to search every corner: collect the Rhine Magic Frogs, Loge's Tear, and a small painting hanging on the wall. To reach it, you will need to use Alberich's special Brutality ability—much to poor Mime's misfortune.
Turn around, leave the Forge, and climb onto the motorcycle. Lift the engine cover: the Glug settles into the center of the engine, serving as its carburetor. Feed it a crystal, and the machine finally roars to life, ready to race through the tunnels.
Poor old Mime!

Follow the railway track to the Reservoir Chamber—for now, it remains silent. Without stopping, turn back and continue straight ahead to the Control Room. Take your seat at the console, but do not pull the lever just yet. Instead, press the upper button to reveal an incomplete puzzle. Insert the piece you found in Mime's Forge, then click on the tiles to uncover fragments of Wotan's story.
On the puzzle, arrange the pieces of Wotan's story in the correct order: the green piece on the left, the blue piece at the top, the second green piece on the right, the brown piece in the center, and the red piece at the bottom. Click on the empty slot to bring the puzzle to life, unlocking new controls. Select the bottom control to display the cave's 3D map. The image flickers, disrupted by a faulty mechanism—a well-placed blow (using Brutality, once again) stabilizes the display. Rotate the tunnel on the 3D map until the circular chamber at the bottom is revealed: Alberich's secret hideout.
Turn off the map, turn around, and head down to the entrance of the underground passage. To unlock the door, rotate the three movable segments until they form a complete red circle. Inside the chamber, collect the Anti-G Cells from the egg, take the diving helmet from the hatch on the left, and watch the Rhine Maidens' video in the hatch on the right.
A classic chicken-and-egg paradox

Return to the Control Room. Bring up the 3D map once again, seal off the hidden passage, and lower the sluice gate on the left to flood part of the cave. Close the map, then pull the lever to return to the motorcycle.
Sketch of the Reservoir Chamber

Ride to the Reservoir Chamber. This time, get off the motorcycle. Glass tubes surround the room. Open the hatches and set each control lever to green. Head to the back of the chamber and take the elevator. Thanks to your earlier actions on the 3D map, you can now enter the flooded tank. Put on your diving helmet, take a deep breath, and dive in. At the bottom, touch the walls. A blinding flash erupts—and you are transported to the realm of the Rhine Maidens.
They watch you with playful smiles and an air of mystery. Each of them will put your resolve to the test. Resist the first, and you will earn the Indifference Key. Reject the second's advances, and she will entrust you with the Distrust Key. Ignore the third, and she will reward you with the Selfishness Key. Continue onward until you reach a cave, then pick up the Disgust Key, lying beside a door on your left.
The room opens onto two aquariums: one large and one small. Pick up the goldfish and release it into the larger tank. A Rhine Maiden emerges from the water, holding a medallion in her hand. Accept it, then use the Disgust Key to lock the door behind you.
In the Pool Chamber, click on the first circle. Give the medallion to the Rhine Maiden, then cross the room to the second one. Dive into the third after equipping the diving helmet. Give the medallion to the Rhine Maiden once again, and she will immediately return it to you.
Important: In the Dreamcast version, a bug causes the inventory to disappear at this point, making it impossible to progress through the rest of the level.
Never Trust the Rhine Maidens

Proceed to the third chamber. Lock the door using the Distrust Key. You enter an inverted room where Alberich's reflection shimmers in a wavering mirror. Shatter it with your Brutality ability, then present the medallion to the Rhine Maiden.
A Glimpse of Alberich's Loathsome Character Model

Continue onward and lock the next door behind you with the Selfishness Key. A weakened Rhine Maiden reaches out to you. Gently embrace her, turn back, then return to pass through the final door. Despite her pleas, lock it with the Indifference Key. Step into the glass chamber and let it carry you beneath the waters. Adjust your diving helmet and set out in search of the Rhinegold.
Bring this treasure to Mime so that he can forge the Ring and the Crown, symbols of your dominion over the Nibelungen. Leave the Forge, climb onto the motorcycle, feed the Glug, and ride back to the Reservoir Chamber. Turn around and make your way out.
Poor Nibelung (Modeling Phase)
Take the first passage on the left to reach the mine freight elevator. Dismount and speak into the communicator—a Nibelungen answers. His tone betrays his distrust. Raise him by lowering the lever to its middle position. Less than cooperative, he openly criticizes your methods. It seems your workers need to be brought back into line. Tell them off! Maybe they’ll...

Climb back onto the motorcycle and ride to the Cistern Chamber. Click on the disc at the bottom of the steel panel at the far end of the room. A compartment slides open—place Loge's Tear inside. Close the hatch, then press the disc once more. The machinery springs to life, the mine rumbles, and the Nibelungen return to work.
Video Walkthrough – Level I: Alberich, Nibelheim, and the Rhine (Dreamcast Version, GD-ROM 2)
Summary of Alberich's Quest
Alberich returns to the mine run by his brother Mime during his absence. There, he discovers that the Nibelungen workers have gone on strike, bringing all mining operations to a halt. In order to forge the ring, whose power rivals that of the gods, Alberich takes possession of the Rhine gold, forces the dwarves to resume their work, and oversees the reopening of the Forge.

Storyboard of the Opening Sequence Featuring Loge, with Selected In-Game Counterparts

You take on the role of Loge, the Spirit of Fire, now in the service of Wotan. The mission hardly troubles you—you approach it with your usual philosophical detachment. In the Forge, strike up a conversation with Mime; his tongue quickly loosens. Then step out into the scorching air of the underground mine and make your way to the Torture Chamber, accessible via the freight elevator—the same one guarded by the grumpy Nibelungen during Alberich's quest.
The Torture Chamber, Scene of a Murder

There, a grim spectacle awaits. Alberich enforces discipline among his workers in his own brutal way—through torture. Approach the leader of the Nibelungen, listen to his final words, then end his suffering with an embrace of flames using Loge's special Fire ability. Continue on to the Control Room and activate the 3D map. Open the passage leading to Alberich's secret hideout. Close the map and make your way down to the hideout. The door mechanism refuses to open? No matter. Fire has always answered to Loge. A single burst of flame is enough to force the passage open.
Inside, begin by collecting the Chrysoberyl, then search the chests to obtain the Phoenix, the Centaur, and the Dragon. Leave the hideout and return to the Control Console. Bring up the 3D map once again and, this time, open the sluice gate on the right. The roar of rushing water blends with the muffled cries of the drowned Nibelungen, sending Alberich into a rage. Close the map and make your way through the mine to the Cistern Chamber. Retrieve Loge's Tear, left beneath the steel panel by Alberich during the previous quest—it will once again prove useful in sustaining your inner flame.
Back at the Forge (Concept Art)
Back at the Forge, give the Chrysoberyl to Mime. In return, he hands you a precious cage—one that will soon prove invaluable. Leave the Forge and return to the mine. Alberich is waiting for you, ready for a final confrontation. The battle begins. He first summons a Cobra, which you defeat by using the Centaur from your inventory. Next, a winged beast swoops down upon you—call forth the Dragon and reduce it to ashes. Finally, the Gorgon emerges from the void, only to be obliterated in a burst of light by your Phoenix. Exhausted and defeated, Alberich is finally captured. Trap him inside the cage, then return to Wotan with your trophies: the Egg, the Ring, and the Crown.

Important: The Dreamcast version takes a noticeable amount of time to load the next sequence, which takes place in the same location as the chapter's opening scene with Loge. When playing on the DEmul emulator, Ring for Dreamcast frequently crashes at this point, likely making it impossible to complete the remainder of the level.
The Image to Reconstruct in the Puzzle

But the giants Fasolt and Fafner, who have witnessed the entire scene, are furious. They are not satisfied. Wotan orders you to reactivate the Egg.
Approach the Egg and use your Fire ability to force the hatch open. A complex sliding puzzle appears—take a screenshot before solving it. Once the image has been restored, a keypad is revealed. Enter 00365, the number of days in a year, to gain access to the heart of the Egg. At the center, you will find a crucible. Place the Ring inside, followed by the Crown. The two relics merge into a new Ring. The giants are already quarreling over its power, each determined to claim it. Freia is finally set free.
Climb the staircase. At the top, you will discover a peculiar ancient metal recording device. Starting from the left, rotate diamonds 1, 3, 4, and 6. Then slowly move the stylus from left to right to play back the engraved message: "The rainbow leads to Valhalla". The device suddenly transforms into an organ. Beginning from the left, play the following sequence: keys 1 through 10, then 15, 14, 13, 11, and 12. The notes echo through the darkness, and an arch of light unfolds across the black sky. A rainbow bridge to the realm of the gods opens before you.
Video Walkthrough – Level II: Loge, Nibelheim II, and the Rock of the Gods (Dreamcast Version, GD-ROM 1)
Summary of Loge's Quest
The giants Fasolt and Fafner demand Freia, the guardian of the gods' immortality, as payment for the construction of their palace. Wotan, the supreme ruler of the gods, reluctantly yields to their demand. Loge then proposes exchanging Freia for Alberich's Ring. Entrusted with this mission by Wotan, he ventures into the depths of the dwarf's mine, determined to seize the treasure and confront Alberich himself.
III. Siegmund and the Enchanted Forest (GD3): Save RING_D3S VMI/VMS
Important: Throughout Siegmund's quest, the Dreamcast version is plagued by slowdowns, freezes, and crashes that can occur at virtually any moment. The accumulation of these issues makes this level almost unplayable. Only great patience—and many repeated attempts—will allow you to continue exploring it, in the hope of eventually reaching its conclusion.
The Treehouse

Turn your back on the hut and take a few steps forward. To your right stands a small pagan shrine, a relic of ancient worship. Ahead, the path splits in two. The left trail leads to the sacred temple, while the right climbs toward Wotan's treehouse. Follow the path to the right and make your way to the dwelling in the tree. Enter, and Wotan will entrust you with a mission: to recover what has been scattered.
Climb the staircase to the first floor. Near the throne, open the wardrobe and take the bow along with the skinned hares. Then examine the throne, where two hidden drawers await. Retrieve a mold from the upper drawer and a metal sample from the lower one.
Facing the throne, you will find a furnace and a sink. Open the small hatch on the edge of the sink to let the water flow into the furnace. Place Loge's Tear on the central pedestal. It sinks into place, releasing a cloud of hissing steam. Set the mold onto the circular base, then add the metal sample. You obtain seven molten alloys. Refill the furnace with water, then open the small cupboard to the left of the descending staircase. Inside, you will find a mold used to craft a miniature Golem.
The Interior of the Treehouse ( Render)
The Mini-Golem Recipe – Puzzle Solution: Lead for the torso – Silver for the head – Iron for the right arm – Tin for the left arm – Gold for the neck – Mercury for the feet – Bronze for the heart
Climb to the second floor and contemplate the dance of the celestial bodies. Take note of Saturn's symbol—it will prove useful later. Head back downstairs, leave the house, and immediately turn left, where a wooden pier stretches out over the water. Board the boat and sail to the island dominated by the great dead tree.

Near the trunk, a flowering bush catches your eye. Use the Wolf Instinct ability (from your inventory) to search it. You will find an ingot, some ordinary berries, and some sleeping berries. Put away Wolf Instinct, return to the pier, then head back to Wotan's house and climb to the first floor.
Artwork of Hunding and Siegmund

Approach the throne, where a mouse hole lies at its base. Send your Mini-Golem in to investigate. Something is resisting in the darkness, but let it handle the situation. Meanwhile, walk over to the press to the right of the throne. First, place the ordinary berries inside, pull the lever, and collect a bottle of juice. Repeat the process with the sleeping berries to produce a sleeping potion. Return to the base of the throne, give the sleeping potion to the Mini-Golem, then send it back into the hole. Before long, it returns victorious, carrying a second ingot.
Leave Wotan's house and head straight toward the forest hut. Give the skinned hares to the Guardian Wolf. Grateful for the offering, it rewards you with a third ingot. Retrace your steps, and when you reach the fork in the path, take the left trail toward the temple of the area.
Climb the steps to the sacred circle. Around you, planetary steles surround a space engraved with mysterious symbols. At the base of each stele lies a scroll, each recounting a fragment of the saga of Siegmund's descendants. Begin reading with the Mercury stele, located to the right of the staircase, then continue clockwise until you reach the Lead stele, just before the steps. After reading each scroll, carefully return it to its original place. Finally, swap the two scrolls positioned on either side of the staircase. The ground suddenly gives way beneath your feet, and you are drawn down into the depths of the temple.
Darkness reigns. Activate Wolf Instinct. Before you lies a sarcophagus, beside a stone wheel carved with a wolf's head. Take a closer look: the symbol is upside down. Rotate it into the correct position, then click on the wheel. The stone bier comes to life, carrying you back to the ground floor of Wotan's house.
Leave the house and return to the pier. Take the boat and sail toward Wotan's house, built against the great rock. Steer the boat into the house and pull the lever. The sarcophagus drifts away across the water, carrying your boat with it. Return to the pier on foot.
Take your bow and hold it over the brazier to ignite an arrow. Aim at the boat and fire. It bursts into flames before sinking beneath the lake, completing the Funeral Rite of Fire. As it burns, you catch sight of a key sinking into the depths with the wreck. You'll have to retrieve it.
Hunding's Character Model

Return to Wotan's house and climb to the top floor. Step out onto the suspended bridge, walk toward the vegetation, and activate Wolf Instinct. You discover a patch of worms—send your Mini-Golem to catch one. Return to the center of the bridge and climb down into the fisherman's shelter. Open the chest and take the fishing rod. Cast your line into the lake, and before long a fish bites. Inside, you find the key you have been searching for. (The good news is that your Mini-Golem kindly took care of baiting the hook for you.)
Return to the temple. Facing the staircase, examine the Saturn stele on the left. Use the key on the small hatch to reveal three slots. Insert the three ingots to obtain the Sacred Wolf Medallion. Then make your way back to the forest hut.
A Peaceful Forest... Or Is It?

Knock on the door. A woman answers—Hunding's wife, the spouse of a brutal and short-tempered warrior. The resemblance is striking. Click on her medallion: it is identical to yours. The emotion of this reunion is short-lived. Hunding returns home, furious to find you there. He is determined to settle the score.
As Hunding settles down with his drink, wait until he sets his mug on the table. Click on the lower-right side of the table, then send your Mini-Golem to discreetly pour the sleeping potion into his drink. The giant warrior soon collapses into a deep sleep. Take advantage of the respite to speak with Sieglinde, your sister. Click on her medallion, then place yours over hers. In return, she entrusts you with her own medallion.
Leave the hut, take a few steps forward, then head right toward the small pagan shrine. Examine it using Wolf Instinct. Place the two medallions on either side of the sword, and the power of blood awakens. You are now ready to face Hunding on equal terms… But Wotan, true to his nature, is a sore loser. The chapter ends in tragedy and ashes.
Summary of Siegmund's Quest
Siegmund sets out to uncover the truth behind the tragic deaths of his twin sister, Sieglinde, and their mother, Fricka. As he ventures deeper into the forest, he comes face to face with Hunding, the husband of his late sister.
IV. Brunnhilde, the Walkyrie (GD3): Save RING_D3B VMI/VMS
Note: Brünnhilde's quest is the only chapter that runs without any known issues on the Dreamcast version. It is fully playable from beginning to end and concludes with a prompt instructing the player to insert GD-ROM 1 to access the ending of Ring. By taking on the role of Wotan's daughter, players can enjoy the most complete and stable experience offered by the Dreamcast Alpha version, free from the slowdowns, freezes, and crashes encountered in the previous chapters.
From Philippe Druillet's Sketch to the In-Game Render (The Space Necropolis)

At the entrance to the space necropolis, your Valkyrie sisters welcome you with solemn ceremony. From there, a vast spiral staircase rises toward the heavens. Hop onto your skateboard—even heroes know how to combine style with efficiency—and begin the ascent. Along the way, you will encounter, in order: on your right, a blazing desert; on your left, a Dragon; on your right, an icy wasteland; farther on, another rocky desert to your right; then a forest; and finally, at the summit, the Great Hall.
Begin with a stop at the Dragon. This detour is not essential to your quest, but it will immerse you in the mystical atmosphere of the place.
Next, make your way to the forest. Walk to the foot of the tree and pick up the Dragon Sword, abandoned there. To your left, an apple lies on the ground—take it. Then leave the area and head toward the icy wasteland.
Enter the eternal frost, walk forward, then turn left. A small cave is hidden behind the snowdrifts—step inside. Within, you will discover a fountain sculpted in the shape of a dragon.
A Stage in the Creation of the Eternal Ice World

Use your Spear on the stone dragon: water begins to flow. Then pierce the dragon with your Sword: the temperature suddenly rises. Retrieve the Conch, then take back your Sword and leave.
The Magic Spear Puzzle
Climb the stone ladder rising before you: a frozen landscape stretches as far as the eye can see. Click on the snow-covered peak—you will discover a frozen Phoenix. Use your Magic Spear to revive it.
Then descend to the shore and pick up a piece of bark washed ashore from a sunken sarcophagus. Next, make your way toward the rocky desert.
To the right of the unfortunate figure chained to the stone wheel, pick the flower. Examine the wheel and click on it: a small chair appears at its base. You will have to disassemble your Golem—a reminder of Siegmund—with the heart being the last part to remove.

The tortured man, finally freed, presents you with one last challenge: reconstruct the figure of the crucified man as follows: Head at row 1, column 4 (r1c4) – Left Hand at r2c7 – Right Hand at r2c1 – Torso at r4c4 – Right Foot at r7c3 – Left Foot at r7c5 – Heart at r3c5
The Crucified Man Puzzle (Solution)

Once the figure is complete, you obtain the Feather. Leave the desert and continue toward the scorching desert. Proceed to the body wrapped in bandages. Four stalks surround it—strike them with your Sword. Then use the Conch to scatter the burning dust. The Phoenix rises from the ashes and consumes the body, leaving behind nothing but a Dead Leaf.
Leave the area and return to the forest. At the foot of the tree where the bound man lies, place your findings in the receptacles from left to right: Flower – Apple – Dead Leaf – Bark.
The tree trembles. The suspended body slowly falls, and you obtain the Thread. Now make your way up to the Pyramid Chamber, at the top of the necropolis.
Approach the door and interact with it: a Buddha emerges in the light. On its pedestal, retrieve the three shapes. First, place the hexagon you collected here into its slot. Then take the triangle, insert the remaining piece into it, and finally place the completed triangle inside the hexagon.
A sacred text appears. Don't try to decipher it—quickly click on the hourglass before it's too late. You are then transported into the heart of the Pyramid.
A Marble Game
Approach the tank and contemplate the eternal cycle: birth, life, death, and so on. Click on the glowing orb at the base of the tank: a Möbius strip appears. A small sphere spins endlessly along it—you must stop it at the center. Proceed by trial and error: first activate the lower-left switch, then the upper-right one when the sphere passes in front of you. Once the sphere has been stabilized, leave the ring. Observe the body inside the tank, then examine the mural on the right. Attach the Thread to one of the terminals: the ritual is completed, revealing the ending of the level.

The ending unfolds before your eyes, enigmatic and fascinating. Perhaps you did not understand everything—the appearance of Isha, the role of the Feather… But one thing is certain: the Twilight of the Gods is approaching. And the story is far from over.
Video Walkthrough – Level IV: Brünnhilde, the Valkyrie (Dreamcast Version, GD-ROM 3)
Summary of Brünnhilde's Quest
Siegmund's half-sister, Brünnhilde comes to his aid during a decisive duel. Enraged by her disobedience, Wotan condemns her to exile from Valhalla. Driven by a desire for redemption, Brünnhilde embarks on a quest to bring the Ring cycle to its conclusion, hoping to restore humanity and reconcile mankind with the god who is jealous of his Valkyrie's power.
Ending (GD1): Save RING_D1E VMI/VMS
Take one last trip to the asteroid where your journey began after emerging from the Dril, or simply place the Death Block in the center of the map as soon as you appear. A short cutscene then takes you to the end credits.
