The Dreamcast development kit (Katana) from Captivation Digital Laboratories
This page invites you to explore the development files of Captivation Digital Laboratories. It notably includes around three incomplete prototypes of the unreleased Half-Life on Dreamcast, consisting mainly of assets. It serves as an appendix to [Dreamcast Development Kits (Katana) to Download], which lists the available Dreamcast (Katana) development kits on the site.
Captivation Digital Laboratories was a video game development studio based in El Granada, a coastal town near San Francisco. Founded by Robert Morgan, former Chief Technology Officer at Sega of America, the company made a name for itself by achieving the technical feat of porting Half-Life to the Dreamcast in collaboration with Sierra Entertainment and Valve. In addition to Half-Life (Dreamcast), from 1996 until the company’s closure in 2001, Captivation worked on a variety of often lesser-known projects, including: a Quake mod for HEAT.net, a Toy Story-themed attraction for DisneyQuest, the KRAD technical demo on Dreamcast, Lose Your Marbles on PC, development libraries for SEGA, as well as a 3D demo of Mort the Chicken for AndNow LLC (one of the earliest implementations of the character).

Regarding Half-Life (Dreamcast): This Katana development kit contains around three builds of the game—one dating approximately from October 2000, another from November 2000, and a final one from February 2001. Unfortunately, the executables and other essential files required to run them are missing. Attempts to repair them by recovering missing data from other known versions of the game (a so-called “Frankenstein” method) allow the prototypes to launch, but they crash after a few levels. As such, these builds mainly serve as a collection of assets in their current state.
Regarding the absence of executables (hypothesis): At the time these builds were created, the executables were likely still in development. The programmers would compile them and load them directly into the development kit’s RAM to test and debug them. These files were typically only copied to the hard drive when performing functional tests on a more complete, working version of the game. This likely explains why the executables for the Half-Life Dreamcast prototypes are missing from this Katana system.

Half-Life, the FPS that didn't have the chance to live on Dreamcast!
Regarding the Half-Life (Dreamcast) assets: Regarding the Half-Life (Dreamcast) assets: There’s nothing truly new here—the textures and models are already known (still to be confirmed).. However, some text strings in the Dreamcast memory card Menu appear to be missing or corrupted. Additionally, the Half-Life: Blue Shift campaign logo seems to match an early version of its design.
